when your daughters cry

A poem, written by my best friend. Can you guess what it's about?

when your daughters cry

What is that dew that I see on your cheek?
Why are you turning to hide it from me?
Be bold for tomorrow…to face another year.
I’m naming this sorrow. I’ll call that a tear.

You hide from the beauty that once was your own.
And shrink from the love that your heart has once known.
You’ve changed in a way that I don’t understand.
You’re lost in a world that I cannot command.

And I don’t know why, so I’ll let you cry.
Little girl.

Cry, cry for the pain that you feel.
As the choice that you made becomes bitterly real.
What have you done? What have you lost?
Did you realize what freedom was going to cost?
Little girl.

You say that you understand innocence now.
But this life is lived by the sweat of our brow.
My rough hands can smooth away tears on your face
But your heart is not healed when you’re in my embrace.

And I don’t know why, so I’ll let you cry.
Little girl.

Cry, cry for the pain that you feel.
As the choice that you made becomes bitterly real.
What have you done? What have you lost?
Did you realize what freedom was going to cost?
Little girl.

And I don’t know why, so I’ll let you cry.
Little girl.

When your daughters cry, only you will know why.
You will know why.
